The question about where was modern pizza invented is a bit problematic because there is no definitive or exact answer about it. Although most people think that pizza comes from Italy, the original pizza may not come from there. Archeological findings have found evidences of flat cakes that are made from flour from the ruins of Pompeii. There are also findings from ancient Persia and Greece about the existence of round flatbread cake with various toppings and assortments for accompaniment. So, how did pizza come to existence and thought to be originated in Italy

The History

In the past, pizza was the peasant’s meal and it has been going for centuries – after the periods of the ancient Greece and Persia, of course. It is believed that the Father of modern pizza was Raffaele Esposito, a humble baker in Napoli, in Campania region, Italy. In 1889, Pizzeria di Pietro was baking pizza for King Umberto and Queen Margherita’s visit. One of the pizzas had the marinara type with basil and mozzarella. It was considered patriotic because it looked like the Italian flag on a plate with the colors of white (from mozarella), red (tomatoes), and green (basil). Queen Margherita loved it so much and the pizza was named after her. So, the answer to where was modern pizza invented is obvious: it is Naples.

So, after Naples was believed to be the first place where was modern pizza invented, the popularity of the meal was spreading out. In 1830, the first pizzeria was opened, called as Antica Pizzeria Port and they are still doing business up until now. The popularity of the round flatbread is increasing when immigrants brought the meal to America. Because of the simplicity, the unique design, and the taste, more and more people were in love with this meal. The first pizza bussiness was initiated by the Italians.

    Modern pizza developed in Naples , when tomato was added to the focaccia in the late 18th century. However, pizza was mainly eaten in the province of Italy
